Cutting through the clutter on the web and finding the perfect candidate is no small task, but utilizing video can help you get the right people through the door. Company culture videos in particular can take text-heavy job postings up a notch and help you stand out from your competition.

Like a well-lit Tinder photo, people (and businesses) can be misleading. That’s why it’s super important to show your potential hires what it’s actually like to work at your company. What does the office look like? Does the culture seem like a good fit? Are the people nice and friendly? These are all valid questions that video can help answer.

Take a look at these four types of company culture videos that you can make today to step up your recruiting game.

Cultural crowdsource

Put your coworkers to work with a simple crowdsourced company culture video. Crowdsourcing works particularly well if your company is made up of more than a handful of people (we’ll talk more about other videos that are great for small businesses later). More people = more footage. Check out this nifty crowdsourced company culture video we made right here at Wistia:

Most of these clips were shot by Wistians themselves with whatever recording device they could get their hands on. These homemade shots pair well with the video’s core message, which is all about being your true self at work.

Crowdsourced videos are arguably the most human of them all — after all, you’re giving your peers the power to tell their own stories, which is about as real as it gets.

Our video producer, Chris, made sure to emphasize how simple the shots could be when asking teammates to contribute, which not only encouraged participation, but also helped people understand the video’s purpose. In an email to the team, he wrote:

“Our goal is to have this video feel as authentic as possible. Ask a friend or family member for help, use a GoPro, or just put your phone in selfie mode.”

The big interview

What better way to learn about a business than to hear from the folks who actually work there! Emma, an email marketing provider, created the “Life at Emma” video series to do just that.

These simple, interview-style videos live on their careers page and showcase real members of their team from a number of departments. Interested in learning what it’s like to be an engineer at Emma? They’ve got a video for that. What about marketing or sales? Yup, you guessed it. More. Videos.

Check out this awesome interview-style video that explains the culture on Emma’s sales team and what you can expect from your peers if you join!

This style of video is perfect for smaller businesses who are crunched for time or resources. Making use of one simple setup means low overhead costs — a colorful backdrop, some studio lights, and your talented peers are all you need to get started.

Emma also does a great job of making the interview feel super authentic. Since the subjects aren’t talking straight into the camera with perfectly crafted lines, it feels like you’re watching real interviews unfold. It’s that type of attention to detail that makes these videos so effective.

B-roll montage

If you’re looking for a sure-fire win, a b-roll montage video could be your new best friend. These company culture videos are super easy to make, and with some background music and a little extra polishing, they can really sparkle. Allow me to set the scene for one of our favorite B-roll montage videos here at Wistia.

It’s 5 pm on a Tuesday evening. Meryl’s getting ready to head home and walk her dog Tatum when an email hits her inbox. She clicks on the subject line with caution. It reads “Bike party this Friday!” Meryl quickly realizes her fate. She must shoot B-roll footage of the bicycle party, with her iPhone.

A bike party _is_ the best party, after all.

You can use a B-roll video to show off your company culture or promote a specific job post on channels outside of your own website, like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. These short, action-packed videos are great for social media because they don’t typically require audio to be super engaging.

Make a big impact on a budget by shooting video with your phone, just like Meryl did. You don’t need to spend a ton of money to make a delightful company culture video — you just need to be in the right mindset. The next time someone brings in a cake for your cubicle-mate’s birthday, capture that classic footage. Carpe diem!

“You don’t need to spend a ton of money to make a delightful company culture video — you just need to be in the right mindset. ”

Slice of life

“Show, don’t tell.” I’m sure you’ve heard this phrase many times before, but this concept is particularly important when it comes to creating authentic company culture videos.

Rather than detailing what the average day looks like for someone who works at your organization, why not just show them? Watch this quick and simple video shot entirely with a GoPro from our friends over at HubSpot.

Not only does this video underscore HubSpot’s belief in having a healthy work-life balance, but it also gives you a quick look into what their Cambridge office looks like and what your future could look like if you ended up working there.

This level of transparency can be incredibly valuable to a potential hire who’s torn between an offer to work at your company or your competition’s.

Let the hiring begin

Whether you’re trying to attract top talent, or simply hoping to showcase your unique workplace culture, video can help you accomplish many of your human resource and recruiting goals. Add some flavor to an otherwise bland job posting or career page with these effective, yet easy-to-make company culture videos. Your company is the bee’s knees. Now go make some video honey.
